Delcy Rodríguez becomes the first president of Venezuela
Santo Domingo.- The Executive Vice President of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, was sworn in this Monday as acting president of the country, two days after the capture of the ruler Nicolás Maduro and his wife, the deputy Cilia Flores, by US forces in a military operation in Caracas and in three other nearby states.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), the main opposition coalition in Venezuela that supports María Corina Machado and Edmundo González Urrutia, called the new National Assembly (AN, Parliament), inaugurated this Monday for the 2026-2031 legislative period and dominated by a Chavista majority, “illegitimate.”
In a statement, the PUD recalled its rejection of the parliamentary elections of May 25, 2025, a process it considered “illegitimate” by arguing that “it did not meet the minimum conditions necessary to be recognized”.
«In that process, the regime awarded itself a National Assembly tailored to its needs, without any participation from the democratic opposition political forces», stated the opposition bloc.
The PUD reaffirmed that the “overcoming of the Venezuelan political crisis must inevitably lead to the full restoration of the constitutional order”, always bearing in mind, it added, the principle of popular sovereignty established by the Constitution.
