Doctors remove seed that grew a root inside a man’s eye in Russia

Ophthalmologists in Russia’s Far Eastern Republic of Sakha, also known as Yakutia, removed a seed that had developed a root inside the eye of a 42-year-old man, according to local reports.

The seed had remained in the man’s eye for four months, during which it developed a root approximately three millimeters long that penetrated the conjunctival tissue, the local outlet Exo-Ykt reported.

The patient, identified as Maxim Sleptsov, was injured last summer while in a forest in the Abyisky District. A tree branch struck his eye, causing inflammation. In the following months, he experienced daily headaches, increased intraocular pressure and a persistent sensation that a foreign object was lodged in his eye.

Sleptsov tried to remove the object himself but was unable to do so because of the pain.

Surgeon removes the seed under local anesthesia

An ophthalmic surgeon eventually removed the seed using an injection needle while the patient was under local anesthesia.

The doctor explained that leaving the foreign object in the eye for such a prolonged period could have led to a corneal ulcer and potentially even vision loss.

Sleptsov said he felt relief immediately after the procedure and finally began waking up without headaches.

The case highlights the potential complications of eye injuries and the importance of seeking medical attention when a foreign object becomes lodged in the eye.
