NEW YORK. A man with an extensive criminal record, who was on parole, was charged with attempted murder after allegedly pushing a 70-year-old woman onto the New York City Subway tracks, in an incident that occurred over the weekend at a Manhattan station.
The suspect, identified by authorities as Zaki Smith, 36, was arrested and faces charges of attempted murder and assault. According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), the incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at the station located at 57th Street and Seventh Avenue, in the Midtown area.

According to preliminary investigation, the victim was pushed onto the tracks during an altercation and suffered a head injury. Several passengers who witnessed the scene quickly descended to the tracks to assist her and managed to bring her to safety before the arrival of a train. Subsequently, the woman was transported to a hospital, where she remains in stable condition.
Authorities reported that Smith was released from prison in May 2025 after serving a sentence for aggravated assault and remained under parole supervision, which was scheduled to conclude in 2030. Additionally, court records show that he has accumulated at least 14 prior arrests for various crimes.
