Flávio Bolsonaro narrowly leads Lula with 13.6% in Brazil’s elections

Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, candidate for the Liberal Party (PL), took the lead over President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the vote count of the second round of Brazil’s presidential elections, held this Sunday, October 25.

According to the partial report, with 13.6% of the vote count, Bolsonaro has 50.03% of the valid votes, while Lula, representative of the Workers’ Party (PT), records 49.97%, a difference of just 0.06 percentage points.

Flávio Bolsonaro’s lead represents a shift from the initial trend of the count, which began with the Brazilian president in the lead. However, the narrow margin between both candidates and the number of votes yet to be counted prevent a definitive result from being established.

Flávio Bolsonaro takes the lead

The presidential runoff was marked by difficulties in transporting voters and a controversial judicial decision that extended voting hours by two hours, which caused confusion in various polling stations.

Magistrate Cristiano Zanin, of the Supreme Federal Court, ordered the extension of the voting period following requests submitted by the campaigns of both candidates, who reported transportation problems and adverse weather conditions in several regions of the country.

Flávio Bolsonaro contests presidency

Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, seeks to lead the Liberal Party back to the Presidency, while Lula aspires to continue at the head of the Brazilian government.

The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) continues with the vote tally to determine who will lead Latin America’s largest economy for the next four years.
