Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said her government is considering suspending the Schengen agreement with Spain in response to the recent surge of irregular migrants arriving in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.
In a statement posted on social media, Meloni described the scenes in Ceuta as “striking” and said they demonstrate that uncontrolled irregular migration poses a threat to the security of Europe’s borders.
Meloni said she discussed possible measures with Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, stressing that Italy “will not stand by” as the migration situation unfolds.
The remarks come after thousands of migrants entered Ceuta in recent days, prompting Spain to strengthen border coordination with Morocco and accelerate the return of Moroccan nationals who crossed irregularly.
