Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul has won a second full term in New York, defeating Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman in the November 3 election. The victory will allow her to remain in office through the end of 2030.

Hochul’s reelection was confirmed by election projections and reported by the Associated Press. She became New York’s first female governor in 2021 after Andrew Cuomo resigned and was elected to her first full term in 2022.

The election also marks a historic moment for the state: Adrienne Adams, Hochul’s running mate, was elected lieutenant governor and will become New York’s first Black woman to hold that office. The two are set to take office on January 1, 2027.

Hochul celebrated the result by thanking voters and saying she would continue working on public safety and affordability. She also addressed President Donald Trump, saying she was willing to cooperate with him on issues affecting New Yorkers but would oppose policies she considered harmful to immigrant families.

Democrats also secured victories in other statewide races. Attorney General Letitia James won another term, while incumbent state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli was also projected to retain his position.

The results reinforce Democratic control of New York’s statewide executive offices. Hochul’s next term will begin in January, as her administration continues to face challenges involving affordability, public safety, immigration and relations with the federal government.
