Panama “welcomed” the “unanimous” decision adopted this Friday by the Organization of American States (OAS), meeting in St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, to hold its fifty-sixth (56th) General Assembly in the Central American country in 2026. “We assume the commitment to host this hemispheric meeting with the dignity, openness, and responsibility demanded by the current circumstances“, stated the Panamanian Vice Minister of Multilateral Affairs and Cooperation of Panama, Carlos Guevara Mann, after the “unanimous” approval by the member states of the organization to hold the 56th General Assembly of the OAS in Panama next year. Guevara highlighted that the meeting in Panama will coincide with the bicentennial of the Amphictyonic Congress of 1826, convened by the Liberator Simón Bolívar, “which took place in our isthmus and sowed the seed of American multilateralism.”

The official recalled that in the two centuries since that first assembly of American states, “that seed has germinated to become a leafy tree, which provides beneficial fruits to the peoples of the continent.”

“Aspiramos, por tanto, a que la próxima asamblea constituya un espacio de reflexión profunda y compromiso renovado con el sistema democrático de gobierno y los principios que sustentan nuestra convivencia: el respeto por la soberanía y el Derecho Internacional, la solución pacífica de controversia, y la cooperación solidaria entre Estados”,

afirmó Guevara .
In that sense, the high-ranking official from the isthmus pointed out that to give “substance” to this purpose of bolstering multilateralism, they invited “several organizations of the Inter-American System to hold sessions in Panama in 2026”
