Person seen emerging from sewer in Queens, raising concerns about underground activity

A person was seen emerging from a sewer in Queens early Monday morning, adding to a series of recent incidents involving people entering and exiting New York City’s underground sewer system.

Authorities said the person was spotted around 4:00 a.m. at the intersection of Juniper Boulevard South and 74th Street in Middle Village. No arrests had been reported in connection with the incident.

Resident Danny O’Neill said he heard that someone approached the area and that other people may have been waiting nearby.

The incident occurred at an intersection surrounded by residential homes and gardens, with a well-known playground located across the street. O’Neill said the situation was concerning, particularly for children in the neighborhood.

“Da un poco de miedo, sobre todo a los niños, pensar en lo que podría estar pasando, en lo que están haciendo”, dijo O’Neill, according to the report.

The latest sighting is not an isolated incident. In August, three people were seen emerging from a sewer near Penn Station during the early morning hours and are being sought by city authorities.

Other incidents were reported in May in Gravesend and Williamsburg, where four people were arrested. According to the New York Police Department, the individuals said they were looking for valuables.

That same month, three people were seen in Queens wearing protective equipment as they entered a sewer and closed the cover behind them.

Last month, surveillance video also captured a group opening a sewer cover in Wantagh and descending into the underground system.

The incidents have prompted some residents to question what may be taking place beneath New York City streets, including speculation about whether people could be spending time or living underground.

The city’s Department of Environmental Protection warned that entering sewers without authorization is illegal and dangerous.
