New York (EFE).- The Spanish Navy training ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano, on which Princess Leonor de Borbón, heir to the Spanish crown, is receiving military training, arrived this Wednesday in New York, its last stop on the American continent before returning to Spain.
The ship entered pier 88 of the city at around 7:00 local time (11:00 GMT) while the 76 midshipmen traveling on it saluted by waving their hats, including the Princess of Asturias, to the rhythm of ‘Ganando barlovento’, a military march of the Navy performed by a band on the ship.
In total, aboard the ship were, in addition to the 76 midshipmen, 20 officers, 20 non-commissioned officers, 130 enlisted sailors and soldiers, and two civilian teachers.

The four-masted brigantine-schooner was received today by representatives of the Spanish consulate in New York, media, and a group of relatives of some of the young people training on the Elcano, who said they hadn’t seen their loved ones since January and who came to the pier carrying Spanish flags.

Princess Leonor will attend a concert
During her stay in New York, Princess Leonor will attend a concert by the Teatro Real de Madrid at the prestigious Carnegie Hall tomorrow, Thursday, and will act as standard-bearer in the flag swearing-in ceremony that will take place on the ship this Friday.
For its part, the ship, which has arrived in New York after its passage through Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic), will be open to the public at certain hours this Saturday and Sunday and will remain in the city until next Tuesday, June 10, when it will begin its return trip to Spain.
Princess Leonor will not join her classmates on the return to Spain, but will fly directly to her country, and will return to the Elcano ship before its stop in Gijón.
Since it set sail from Cádiz on January 11, the Elcano has made stops in the Spanish Canary Islands. From there, it began its journey to America and docked in Salvador de Bahia (Brazil), after nearly a month of crossing the Atlantic.
The following stop was Montevideo (Uruguay) and then crossed the Strait of Magellan to call at Punta Arenas and Valparaíso (Chile), El Callao (Peru), Panama and Colombia (Cartagena/Santa Marta), before arriving in Santo Domingo, from where it departed for New York on May 24th.
