New York State Senator Luis R. Sepúlveda expressed his firm rejection this Thursday of the decision by the Governor of Puerto Rico, Jenniffer González, to share personal information of Dominican immigrants with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Sepúlveda, of Puerto Rican descent and with Dominican citizenship, described the action as an “unacceptable betrayal” towards a community that, according to him, has been key in the economic, social, and cultural development of the island.
“The well-being, privacy, and stability of thousands of working families are being put in danger,” warned the senator, who asked González to immediately stop any cooperation with federal authorities on immigration issues.
He also requested the implementation of protection measures to safeguard the rights of the immigrant population in Puerto Rico.
“No government should endorse policies that promote fear, persecution, and the criminalization of vulnerable sectors. These types of decisions, in addition to being immoral, undermine citizen trust and generate an environment of exclusion incompatible with the democratic and humanitarian values that we defend,” concluded the legislator.
