A 17-year-old was hospitalized with serious injuries after a failed cliff jump at Sunset Cliffs in San Diego, California, on Saturday.
According to local reports, the teen ran toward the edge of the rocky bluff before attempting the jump but failed to clear a rock shelf below. He struck the rocks before falling into the ocean.
San Diego lifeguards responded to the scene, rescued the injured teenager from the water and transferred him to emergency medical personnel, who took him to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Sunset Cliffs is a popular destination for cliff jumping, but authorities and local residents have repeatedly warned about the dangers posed by unstable, eroding bluffs and hidden rock formations. Speaking to CBS 8, Point Loma resident Rae-Kwon Goldsmith urged inexperienced people not to attempt the jumps, saying the location is only suitable for those who understand the risks involved.
