The US supports Haiti’s Prime Minister as the Transition Council’s term ends.

Port-au-Prince,.- The United States Embassy in Haiti stated this Wednesday that it supports “the leadership of Prime Minister (Alix Didier) Fils-Aimé in building a strong, prosperous, and free Haiti” in the face of the expiration of the mandate of the Presidential Transition Council (CPT) on February 7.

Also, the US embassy also reported, in a previous message, the arrival of military vessels, specifically the USS Stockdale, the USCGC Stone and the USCGC Diligence, as part of Operation Southern Spear.

“Your presence reflects the unwavering commitment of the United States to the security, stability, and a more promising future for Haiti. The U.S. Navy and Coast Guard reaffirm their alliance and support to ensure a safer and more prosperous Haiti,” the embassy indicated. This occurs a few days before the CPT’s mandate expires, on February 7th. On January 25th, the U.S. Department of State announced the revocation of visas for two members of the (CPT), as well as their family members, for their alleged involvement with “gangs and other criminal organizations” in the Caribbean country. Days earlier, the CPT reported the beginning of a process to replace the current prime minister, Fils-Aimé, and substitute him with a prime minister from the interim government with a maximum term of 30 days. Previously, the United States had shown opposition to this idea, as they believed that modifying the composition of the Haitian government would be considered an act that undermines efforts to restore basic security and stability in the country, as indicated on January 23 by the Under Secretary of the U.S. Department of State, Christopher Landau. Haiti is experiencing a severe political and social crisis, according to the UN office for the Caribbean country, at least 5,915 people died and another 2,708 were injured in the country in 2025 due to gang violence and operations by security forces to combat it.
