For Justin and Jared Camilo, wearing the NYPD uniform represents more than a career. It is a family legacy inspired by their father, Gilberto Camilo, a former New York City police officer who dedicated years to public service.
Justin, 24, graduated from the Police Academy in 2024 and was assigned to the 33rd Precinct, the same command where his father served during his career. Jared, 22, graduated this year and joined the neighboring 34th Precinct. Both brothers now patrol communities in Upper Manhattan, including Washington Heights and Inwood, areas with a large Dominican population.
Gilberto Camilo, the son of Dominican immigrants from Santiago, joined the NYPD in 1997 and served in several Manhattan precincts. He says he taught his sons that police work is about more than fighting crime: it is also about listening, treating people with dignity and helping those in need. Today, his sons are continuing that tradition in the communities where their father once served.
