Washington.- Amid the disclosure of court documents related to a now-closed federal investigation, U.S. President Donald Trump received New York City Mayor Eric Adams at the White House. While Adams assured that the meeting’s objective was to discuss crucial issues for the city, Trump offered a different version of the reason for the visit.
“We practically didn’t talk about anything. He came to greet me, he was very cordial. Actually, I think he came to thank me, honestly. That was his true intention, in my opinion. He is a good person,” the president expressed when questioned by the press about the meeting.
Although Trump did not specify what he meant by the gesture of gratitude, some interpret his words as an indirect allusion to the closure of the federal corruption case involving Adams, which had been promoted in the last days of the Biden administration.
For his part, the New York City mayor published a video on social media after the meeting, where he explained that his presence in Washington responded to the commitment to represent the interests of New Yorkers. “What happens in Washington directly affects New York, and my duty is to ensure that this relationship benefits our citizens,” said Adams.
The meeting between the two took place almost simultaneously with the Justice Department declassifying hundreds of pages about the federal case against Adams, including search warrants and affidavits. The disclosure came after legal requests made by media outlets such as The New York Times and New York Post.

From his team, Adams maintained that the purpose of the visit was to manage federal funds for key projects in the city, including infrastructure and social services. He also noted that he expects new meetings with the federal administration in the coming weeks to continue the dialogue.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that it was Adams himself who requested to meet with the president, although she did not provide additional details about the topics discussed.
Later, through an official statement, Adams reiterated his commitment to the city: “New Yorkers elected me to represent them and fight for their needs. I met today with President Trump and his team to discuss issues essential to the future of our city. It was a productive conversation that marks the beginning of a positive collaboration for the benefit of all.”
