Authorities in Maracaibo, Venezuela, unveiled a statue honoring Tsunami, a rescue dog credited with helping save dozens of lives following the devastating earthquakes that struck the country on June 24. The sculpture was unveiled at La Vereda del Lago park in a ceremony attended by Tsunami’s owner, Jorge Beens, municipal authorities and members of the public.
Maracaibo Mayor Giancarlo Di Martino described Tsunami as “a true hero” and said the monument recognizes the dog’s service during the search and rescue efforts. He said the statue will serve as a permanent reminder of faith and heroism for the people and families who visit the park.
The tribute also highlights the joint work carried out by Tsunami and his handler during the search and rescue operations following the two earthquakes recorded in La Guaira. The authorities said the recognition seeks to honor the rescue team’s efforts in the aftermath of the disaster.
