A viral video showing a priest celebrating Mass while wearing a construction helmet and a statue of Christ secured with chains has sparked debate on social media, with users questioning whether the scene was intended as satire, criticism or a precaution following recent accidents involving religious crosses.

The footage circulated after two incidents involving religious crosses in Ecuador and Colombia. Some viewers interpreted the unusual measures as a response to concerns about the safety of religious structures during church services.

One of the most tragic incidents occurred on October 17, 2026, in Guayaquil, Ecuador, where 53-year-old priest Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari died after a wooden cross fell on him during a Eucharistic celebration at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church.

The incident was captured during a livestream of the service. Before the accident, Sánchez had reflected on mortality during his homily, telling the congregation, “One day, all of us who are here will also die.”
