Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has declared three days of official mourning following a deadly railway accident on October 28, when two high-speed passenger trains operated by Renfe and Iryo collided in Urda, Toledo, Spain.

“The whole of Spain is in mourning,” Sánchez said, according to Spanish media reports. The prime minister traveled to Urda to assess the situation and receive firsthand information about the disaster.

The collision has left at least 68 people dead, according to the report, with emergency services responding to the aftermath of the crash.

Sánchez also pledged that authorities would pursue a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.

The declaration of official mourning is intended to honor the victims as Spain faces one of its deadliest recent railway disasters. Further details about the cause of the collision and the full extent of the damage are expected as the investigation continues.
