Cosette Bonnelly, a legacy that remains

Dominican journalism is in mourning following the passing of Cosette Bonnelly Betances, executive director of El Nuevo Diario. Her departure leaves a void in an industry to which she dedicated a large part of her life, working with discretion, commitment, and a vision that allowed her to understand where the media was heading. Her legacy deserves to be recognized and remembered.

Cosette was one of the main drivers of the digital transformation of El Nuevo Diario. She understood early on that journalism had to evolve to stay close to the people and respond to new ways of consuming information. Her work demonstrates that behind a newspaper there are not only those who write or appear in front of the cameras. There are also people who, from management and administration, make it possible for projects to grow, modernize, and endure.

In times when the media faces great technological and economic challenges, her trajectory leaves an important lesson: renewing oneself does not mean abandoning the principles that give meaning to journalism. It means finding new ways to inform without losing the commitment to the truth and society. Cosette knew how to bet on that path and contributed to strengthening an institution that is part of the history of the Dominican press.

From De Último Minuto, we express our deep sorrow and offer our condolences to her husband, Mr. Persio Maldonado; to her children Persio Sully, Mónica, and Sarah; and to the entire El Nuevo Diario family, with whom we share the challenges and responsibilities of this profession. We bid farewell to Cosette Bonnelly with respect, gratitude, and admiration. Her absence will be felt, but the example of a woman who worked to advance journalism remains.
