Anthony Volpe exits injured after home run in Yankees’ victory over Red Sox

NEW YORK.— Anthony Volpe was both the hero and the victim in the New York Yankees’ 9-6 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Friday night, June 6, in the first duel of the season between the historic American League rivals.

Volpe opened the scoring with a home run in an explosive five-run first inning for the Yankees. However, in the second inning, he was hit on the elbow by an 88.2 mph pitch from Boston’s starter, Walker Buehler. The young shortstop was substituted at the start of the fourth inning. Fortunately, manager Aaron Boone confirmed that the X-rays and a CT scan were negative.

Aaron Judge shone again by recording his ninth game of three or more hits in the season, raising his average to the top of the Major Leagues with .397. In front of a crowd of 46,783 fans at Yankee Stadium, Jazz Chisholm Jr. also stood out with three hits, a home run, four RBIs and two stolen bases. Paul Goldschmidt added another home run for a Yankees team that took a 7-0 lead in the second inning and 8-1 in the fifth inning.

All the starters connected at least one unstoppable for New York (39-23), which has won 9 of its last 12 games and 15 of the last 20, reaching its best mark of the season with 16 games above .500.

For their part, the Red Sox (30-35) suffered their ninth loss in 12 games, committing two errors that increased their total to 57, the highest in the league.

Rafael Devers hit his 29th home run against the Yankees, while 22-year-old Mexican Marcelo Mayer hit his first home run in the Major Leagues with a 410-foot hit. Buehler, in his first appearance at Yankee Stadium since the last out of the 2024 World Series, allowed seven runs (five earned) and seven hits in two innings. The closer Devin Williams earned his seventh save in eight attempts.
