Oakland, CA. — In one of the most impactful moves prior to the MLB Trade Deadline, the Oakland Athletics acquired the highly sought-after Dominican prospect
Leodalis De Vries, ranked as the
number 3 in all of baseball by MLB Pipeline, in a transaction that also included pitchers
Braden Nett,
Henry Báez and
Eduarniel Núñez.

The agreement sends the San Diego Padres to
star closer Mason Miller, summoned to the All-Star Game in 2024, and to starting pitcher
JP Sears, notably strengthening the Californian team’s pitching staff in their fight for the postseason.
De Vries, a Dominican infielder of just 18 years old, is considered a future star of the sport, thanks to his combination of power, defense, and offensive maturity. His arrival in Oakland represents a key step in the franchise’s reconstruction process.
Next to him, three promising pitchers also join the Atlético team:
- Braden Nett, right-handed pitcher and San Diego’s number 3 prospect,
- Henry Báez, Dominican and number 13 prospect in the system,
- Eduarniel Núñez, also from the Dominican Republic, ranked 17th.
For his part, Mason Miller has been one of the most dominant pieces of the bullpen in the American League during this campaign, recording
an ERA of 3.76 with
20 saves in 38 appearances, and
59 strikeouts in 38.1 innings, while JP Sears has offered solidity from the starting rotation.
With this change, the Athletics add high-impact young talent, while the Padres reinforce their pitching in search of a strong season finish.
