Benches clear after collision between Contreras and Caratini at Fenway Park

BOSTON. – A moment of tension was experienced this Saturday at Fenway Park during the game between the Red Sox and the Twins, after a clash at the plate between the Venezuelan Willson Contreras and the Puerto Rican catcher Victor Caratini that caused both teams to leave their dugouts. The action occurred in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Contreras tried to score after a double by Ceddanne Rafaela. Despite the stop signal from third base coach Chad Epperson, the Venezuelan decided to continue towards home plate.

Without much room to slide, Contreras ended up making contact with Caratini, who was protecting home. The Twins catcher reacted angrily after the collision and both players exchanged words while briefly holding each other in the middle of the play.

Although the situation raised the tension on the field and caused the benches and bullpens to empty, the incident did not escalate and was quickly controlled without physical confrontations. According to the initial assessment, the play appeared legal both due to Caratini’s defensive position partially blocking the plate and the way Contreras tried to reach safely. After the altercation, the head of the umpiring crew, Will Little, issued warnings to both teams before resuming the match. Moments before the incident, Contreras had hit an infield single and slid headfirst into first base, accidentally knocking down the Twins’ first baseman, Kody Clemens, in an action that had already heightened the intensity of the game.
