MESA, Arizona.– The bond between Bob Melvin and the Oakland Athletics adds a new chapter. The organization announced his hiring as a special assistant to baseball operations, a role from which he will serve as a direct advisor to the management on sports matters.

Melvin’s relationship with the club dates back to his childhood, when he attended the Coliseum to watch his idol Sal Bando and the historic squad of the 1970s. Decades later, he consolidated that bond during his time as team manager between 2011 and 2021, a period in which he became one of the most successful managers in the history of the franchise. With 64 years old, Melvin holds the second place in victories as a manager of the Athletics with 853, only surpassed by the legendary Connie Mack, who accumulated 3,582 wins managing the organization in its Philadelphia stage between 1901 and 1950. During his ten campaigns in charge of the club, he led the team to six postseason appearances — including three divisional titles and three wild card classifications — and was twice recognized as Manager of the Year. After his departure, he managed the San Diego Padres between 2022 and 2023 and subsequently the San Francisco Giants in the 2024 and 2025 seasons. In total, the experienced manager has a lifetime record of 1,678 wins and 1,588 losses in 22 seasons, a career that also includes a Manager of the Year award with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2007.
