Cristopher Sánchez achieves historic inning of four strikeouts in the World Baseball Classic
MIAMI. – Dominican pitcher Cristopher Sánchez made history on Friday night by recording an unusual four-strikeout inning during the game between the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, played at loanDepot park in Miami.
The Dominican left-hander started the game by striking out the first Nicaraguan batter, Chase Dawson, but he reached first base due to a wild pitch. Nicaragua’s offense took advantage of the moment and mounted a threat with consecutive hits from Benjamín Alegría and Ismael Munguía, as well as a walk negotiated by Mark Vientos, loading the bases with no outs and taking an early lead.
However, Sánchez reacted with authority. The Philadelphia Phillies’ opener dominated the next three batters, retiring them all by way of the strikeout: “Omar Mendoza”, “Emanuel Trujillo”, and “Melvin Novoa”.
With that performance, Sánchez became the first pitcher in World Baseball Classic history to complete an inning with four strikeouts, a rarity that occurs when a batter reaches base after a dropped third strike.
The dramatic episode marked the beginning of an encounter full of emotions between both teams, before a large attendance of fans in Miami.
Despite his historical feat, the Dominican’s outing was brief. Sánchez left the mound after working just 1.1 innings, in which he allowed two earned runs and six hits.
