San Diego, USA – Dominican pitcher Cristopher Sánchez wrote a new page in the history of the Philadelphia Phillies after extending his impressive streak of scoreless innings and setting a new franchise record.
Sánchez worked seven scoreless innings in the Phillies’ 3-0 victory over the San Diego Padres at Petco Park, raising his streak to 44.1 consecutive innings without allowing runs, the longest for a Philadelphia pitcher since 1893.
With this performance, the lefty surpassed the record held by Hall of Famer Grover Alexander, who had recorded 41 consecutive innings without allowing runs during the 1911 season.
The historic performance was not without drama. In the fourth inning, Manny Machado hit a deep fly ball to left field that forced Panamanian Edmundo Sosa to move to the warning track to make the out. Later, Dominican Ramón Laureano hit a double with two outs, putting the potential run in scoring position, but Sánchez dominated Jackson Merrill with a ground ball to the infield to preserve the score.
The Dominican’s streak began on April 30 against the San Francisco Giants and since then he has become one of the most dominant pitchers in Major League Baseball.
