DETROIT. – With a solid performance from their pitching staff and timely hitting, the Detroit Tigers defeated the San Francisco Giants 3-1 yesterday, Monday, May 26, at Comerica Park, thus avoiding the sweep in the three-game series.
After losing the first two games of the series (4-6 and 3-4), the team managed by A.J. Hinch took the field determined to turn things around. Starting pitcher Casey Mize dominated the San Francisco lineup for six complete innings, allowing just one run and striking out five batters, to earn the victory. The bullpen took care of the rest with an efficient relief effort from Tyler Holton, Andrew Chafin, and Jason Foley, who was credited with the save.
The Bengali offense made itself felt early in the game. In the second inning, Kerry Carpenter hit a run-scoring double that put the Tigers ahead. Subsequently, Spencer Torkelson added a run-driving line drive to center field, and in the fifth inning, Zach McKinstry brought in the third run with a single to right field.The Giants, for their part, could only score one run in the fourth inning, the result of a sacrifice fly by Michael Conforto that brought Thairo Estrada home. San Francisco’s starter, Logan Webb, took the loss despite a decent performance in six innings, in which he allowed the three earned runs.
With this result, Detroit improves its record to 25-29, while San Francisco falls to 27-27, leveling its mark in the season. For the Tigers, the victory represents an important morale boost for the upcoming commitments, in which they will seek to gain ground in the American League Central division.
The series concluded with a favorable balance for the Giants, but Monday’s game made it clear that the Tigers still have what it takes to compete, especially if they continue to receive good pitching from the mound.
