Cincinnati manager Terry Francona reported that the latest tests performed on the star player show a recovery of nearly 90 percent, a result he described as very positive for the organization.
“He received very good news. He is 90 percent recovered, which is fantastic. He is increasing both the intensity and the amount of physical work, and we will continue to evaluate his progress over the weekend,” explained Francona.
The organization will re-evaluate the Dominican player’s situation in the coming days to determine if he is ready to begin a minor league rehab assignment, although there is no definitive decision on the matter yet.
De la Cruz, 23, was placed on the 10-day injured list on June 1 after suffering the injury while running the bases in a game against the Atlanta Braves. The ailment ended a remarkable streak of 276 consecutive games played.
Before getting injured, the Dominican player was one of Cincinnati’s main offensive figures, recording a .280 batting average, with 12 home runs, 37 RBIs, 10 stolen bases, and an .855 OPS in 58 games.
The shortstop has accompanied the team during its recent road trips and has performed light conditioning work and defensive drills as he continues his recovery process.
Francona highlighted the player’s desire to return to the lineup as soon as possible.
“I wanted to play this very night,” the manager commented with a laugh. “He has a huge passion for competing, but we must ensure he returns fully recovered to avoid any relapse.”
The Reds hope that De la Cruz’s positive progress continues over the next few days, with the hope of getting one of their main stars back before the month of June concludes.
