Eugenio Suárez avoids hand fracture and could return to the lineup this Wednesday

DETROIT — Good news for the D-backs and potential buyers of Eugenio Suárez: the Venezuelan third baseman did not suffer a fracture in his right hand and could return this Wednesday to the Arizona team’s lineup.

Suárez was hit on Monday by a 95.6 mph sinker from reliever Will Vest, in the ninth inning of the game against the Tigers. The impact on his right index finger set off alarms at a key moment in the season, just days before the Trade Deadline (July 31).

However, the X-rays were negative and additional examinations —including an MRI and a CT scan— revealed no structural damage. Although he was excluded from Tuesday’s lineup, reports indicate that he could be back this Wednesday if the inflammation continues to subside.

The incident generated concern among several executives from teams interested in acquiring him. According to Buster Olney of ESPN, some managers considered that any move for Suárez would require complete medical certainty: “If you pay a price like that, you have to feel very good about what you’re getting,” expressed a member of a board of directors. Suárez, one of the most sought-after bats on the current market, had already received another hit in July, this time on his left little finger during the All-Star Game. In both cases, the studies were favorable. So far this season, the Venezuelan has demonstrated offensive and defensive consistency, making him a valuable asset for the D-backs as well as any franchise in the fight for the playoffs. Although the D-backs have not confirmed their willingness to negotiate him, several teams —including the Tigers themselves— have shown interest in acquiring him.

Eugenio Suárez’s situation is framed within a context of an uncertain but potentially explosive market. Teams like the Yankees, Blue Jays, Rays, Cubs, Brewers, and Reds are actively seeking reinforcements, although prices have remained high, especially for hitters and relievers. Players like Dylan Cease, Sandy Alcántara, Cedric Mullins, Ryan O’Hearn, Marcell Ozuna, and Cuban Luis Robert Jr. are also among the names mentioned in recent rumors. Aaron Judge’s situation and his elbow injury have further complicated the outlook for New York, while other franchises are waiting to define their course in the coming days.
