Washington, D.C. – Dominican outfielder José Sirí of the New York Mets will begin his rehabilitation assignment in the minor leagues next week after overcoming a fracture in his left tibia that kept him out of action for more than four months. This step opens the possibility that the outfielder will contribute to the team in September, when the Mets seek to strengthen their roster for the final stretch of the season.

Sirí, 30, arrived at the New York team during the offseason with expectations of occupying an important role in center field. However, on April 12, he suffered the fracture that delayed his debut with the franchise. Although his return was expected for June, the recovery was slower than anticipated, and now the player is running and performing baseball activities progressively. The return of Sirí could modify the rotation of the Mets’ outfield, currently covered by Cedric Mullins and Tyrone Taylor. Mullins will continue to face right-handed pitchers, while Taylor has struggled in limited opportunities against lefties, with an OPS of .195 since July 21. The presence of Sirí, another right-handed hitter and solid defender, could force the team to make decisions about Taylor’s future, whose contract ends after the season. In 2024, Sirí hit 18 home runs and stole 14 bases with the Rays, statistics that support the expectation of his contribution to the New York team. Meanwhile, the Mets value having the option to activate the Dominican player, offering greater depth to their lineup heading into the decisive stage of the calendar.
