HOUSTON. The Miami Marlins pulled off one of the most spectacular defensive plays of the season by completing the first triple play in Major League Baseball in 2026, an action that unfolded in just five seconds during Tuesday’s game against the Houston Astros at Daikin Park.

The historic play occurred in the eighth inning, after Dominican Yordan Álvarez and Mexican Isaac Paredes hit consecutive singles. With runners on first and second, Venezuelan José Altuve hit a ground ball to Panamanian third baseman Leo Jiménez, who stepped on third base for the first out, threw to Xavier Edwards to retire the runner at second, and he completed the sequence with a throw to Kyle Stowers at first base to seal the triple play.

“It’s great to be part of something like this. Those are plays you don’t see very often on a baseball field,” said Stowers, who admitted that at first he thought the play would end in a double play.

Miami manager Clayton McCullough also highlighted the defensive execution.

“I always try to take something positive out of it. Being able to see it in person and observe how the whole play developed was fantastic,” he stated.

Despite the brilliant defensive display, the Marlins could not react in the final part of the game and fell 5-3 to the Astros, a result that extended their losing streak to eight consecutive games.

Catcher Joe Mack called the triple play an unforgettable moment.

“It was truly incredible. I had never seen one in person. I raised my arms and started celebrating. It was a huge moment for us,” he commented.

The triple play was the first recorded in Major League Baseball during the 2026 season and only the second in Marlins history. The previous one had occurred on July 28, 2002 against the then Montreal Expos, while the most recent one in the Majors had been executed by the Los Angeles Angels against the Dodgers on August 12, 2025.
