Meyer had a difficult start on Monday against the Colorado Rockies, allowing five runs (four earned) and 10 hits in five innings, in a 6-4 loss for the Marlins at loanDepot park. The right-hander has struggled recently, with an ERA of 7.01 in his last seven starts, after a promising start to the season with a 2.10 ERA.
Meyer’s absence opens a vacancy in the rotation right before the start of a three-city road trip, which begins on Monday in Pittsburgh against the Pirates. This could open the door for the return of Dominican Eury Pérez, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery.
Manager Skip McCullough indicated that Pérez, who is making his final rehab start this Tuesday with Jacksonville, could join the rotation during the trip:
“We are going to integrate Eury into the rotation on this tour. We hope everything goes well for him today, that he finishes healthy and pitches well, and then we will decide how many days to give him before his next start.”
Options for Monday
If Eury isn’t ready in time, the Marlins could turn to other internal options like Janson Junk or the Mexican Valente Bellozo, both long relievers capable of opening games.
Pérez, one of the organization’s biggest prospects, had a standout performance in his rehabilitation, including seven strikeouts in his sixth recent start. If activated, his return would mark a key moment in the restructuring of the Marlins’ pitching staff. With a record affected by injuries and underperformance, the Miami team hopes that Eury Pérez’s return will inject stability and talent into a rotation in need of positive results.
