With a sweeper that retired Coby Mayo in the third inning, Skenes reached the 200-strikeout mark, finishing his performance with eight strikeouts in five innings and 64 pitches, while the Pirates remained ahead 1-0 thanks to a home run by Spencer Horwitz in the fourth inning.
In the 144-year history of Pittsburgh, only eight pitchers had reached this mark: Ed Morris in the 19th century, Bob Veale in the 60s, and in the 21st century Óliver Pérez, Mitch Keller, A.J. Burnett, Francisco Liriano, and Gerrit Cole. With his 203 strikeouts, Skenes currently leads the National League and ranks third in Major League Baseball, only behind Garrett Crochet (Red Sox) and Tarik Skubal (Tigers). Within the history of the Pirates, he ranks 11th all-time and third among right-handed pitchers, behind Keller (210) and Burnett (209).
