SAN DIEGO. When the Padres needed it most, Fernando Tatis Jr. came through with the hit that changed history.

The Dominican star hit a spectacular walk-off home run in the ninth inning to give San Diego a dramatic 5-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds at Petco Park, also securing their first series win in the last five played.
Although criticism had focused on Tatis’s lack of home runs for much of the season, the outfielder has shown in recent weeks that his impact goes far beyond power. His offensive production, base running speed, and defensive versatility have been fundamental in keeping the Padres competitive.

“It was about time to win a series. “Doing it this way makes it even more special,” Tatis expressed after celebrating the second walk-off home run of his career. “As a team, we had been having good at-bats and everything was building up until we reached that moment.”
The decisive hit was a powerful line drive to left field that just cleared the fence, enough to unleash the euphoria of the fans present at Petco Park. The ball left his bat at 106.3 miles per hour, a demonstration of the power that many hoped to see again.
Beyond the home run, recent numbers support the Dominican’s resurgence. In his last 20 games, he is batting .383 with a .438 on-base percentage, once again establishing himself as one of San Diego’s main offensive threats.
Although the team continues to face offensive difficulties and occupies the bottom spots in the Major Leagues in several collective categories, Tatis’ performance offers encouraging signs for the immediate future.
“There is no secret formula,” the player explained. “It has been a lot of hard work with the hitting coaches. We have kept working, staying together, and finding ways to improve.”
Within the organization, there were never any doubts about his ability. For the coaching staff and his teammates, Tatis’s supposed return is simply the continuation of a natural process.
“Personally, I never thought he had left,” stated coach Craig Stammen. “He has worked hard all this time. Sometimes results take a while to arrive, but his perseverance has been evident.”
The victory had a special flavor for the Padres, who were coming off a painful extra-innings loss the night before. Tatis had previously contributed with an RBI single that tied the game in the fifth inning before becoming the hero at the end of the game.
