Araujo and Reyes lead Titans’ triumph

SAN CRISTÓBAL.- On a night where Romeau Ferguson presented personal foul problems, Jonathan Araújo and Xavier Reyes stood out for the Southern Titans in the 87-83 victory over the Reales de La Vega, in a match held at the San Cristóbal sports complex.

Araujo, with 17 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists, and Reyes, who contributed 16 points and 5 boards coming off the bench, gave the Titans their fourth win of the season. By Titans (4-4), Ferguson also stood out, with 15 points; Dana Tate Jr., with 13 and Shaun Williams, who contributed 12. For the Royals (4-4), Sekou Sylla scored 13 points and grabbed 8 rebounds, Anphernee Acevedo scored 11 points, while Anderson Mirambeaux and Alanzo Frink added 10 each. The Reales implemented a suffocating defense from the first quarter and with a three-pointer by Alanzo Frink they pulled away by 9 (23-14), with 2:05 remaining and a basket by Keith Williams, with 23 seconds left, secured the period for the vegans (25-14). The Titans erased a 15-point deficit in the second quarter thanks to a 19-6 run that put them ahead (32-31), after Xavier Reyes effectively made two free throws, with 3:01 remaining before halftime. The Vegans were able to adjust to contain the bleeding and even the score, which reached halftime 39-38 for the light blue team. In the first 20 minutes of action, Jonathan Araujo led the Titans’ offense with 10 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists, followed by Shaun Williams and Romeau Ferguson, who each scored 7 points. For Reales, Alanzo Frink recorded 10 units and Darius Mcneill, 8. The battle in the third quarter continued until Reyes, with a step back, scored a three-pointer that put the Titans ahead by 10 (61-51), with 2:18 to play, a distance that was maintained until the end of the period. The Royals reacted in the last 5:00 minutes. Anphernee Acevedo scored a basket after receiving contact and brought the vegans closer by 7 (81-74), with 3:08 remaining, and Randy Santos put the score at 2 (83-81) by completing a three-point play after scoring following contact and making a free throw, but Reyes made a breakaway with a basket that put the Titans 4 points ahead (85-81), with 24 seconds left, and two free throws made by Araujo sealed the victory.
