SAN CRISTÓBAL.- Xavier Reyes and Romeao Ferguson led the South Titans’ attack in the fourth quarter to defeat the Cañeros del Este 87-74 in a game held at the San Cristóbal sports complex in the continuation of The LNB Super League, in option to the Banreservas Cup. Reyes, who scored 12 points in the last 10 minutes of the game, finished with 18 points and 6 rebounds, while Ferguson scored 22 points and dished out 5 assists. Jonathan Araujo recorded a double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds. With the Titans’ triumph, their record improves to 5-7, while the Cañeros stand at 6-8, both teams fighting for qualification to the elimination phase. For the Cañeros, who had problems with three-pointers, shooting for 17 percent (6/35), the most outstanding were Yeison Colomé, who scored 18 points and 5 assists; Lazar Lugic and Eusebio Suero registered 14 points each. The Titans relied on their suffocating defense in the second stretch of the first quarter to take control of the game. However, the Cañeros gradually reacted and managed to erase a 10-point deficit, although the blues pulled away again to dominate the first half and go into halftime with a 9-point lead (50-41). The San Cristóbal team shot 46 percent from the field (17 of 37) in the first two quarters and was perfect from the free throw line (12 of 12). Jonathan Araújo led the offense with 11 points and 5 rebounds, while Romeao Ferguson and Isaiah Rivera contributed 10 points each. For the Cañeros de La Romana, Lazar Lugic led the attack with 14 units, Marvin Smith Jr. added 7 and Eusebio Suero added 6, in a first half in which the team shot for 50 percent from the field. Despite Colomé scoring 7 points to bring the Cañeros closer, the home team managed to stay ahead by 7 (63-56), in a third quarter where they had problems with ball handling, recording 10 turnovers. The national two-time champions were able to assert their dominance in the final quarter with three-pointers from Ferguson and Reyes, to pull away by 14 (74-60), with 5:04 remaining. A three-pointer from Colomé came with 56 seconds left to play but it was not enough to put the Cañeros back in the game.
