NEW YORK, United States.– Former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom officially announced his candidacy for the 2027 WNBA Draft this Monday, after publicly expressing his intention to compete in the United States women’s basketball league.

Kanter Freedom, who had an 11-season career in the NBA, announced his decision through his social media and published a formal statement addressed to the WNBA, dated last August 6, in which he requests to be included in the list of candidates for the upcoming Draft.
In the document, the former player points out that he meets the requirements established in the league’s collective bargaining agreement related to age and collegiate eligibility, and requests that the WNBA office officially confirm receipt of his application.
Kanter Freedom’s decision comes amidst the debate that has been generated in recent weeks surrounding the participation of transgender athletes in women’s basketball.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert recently communicated to the teams that the league is working to address the issue and ensure the integrity of the competition and fair play.
Current WNBA rules state that players who are women may participate, although the regulations do not specify in detail aspects related to gender identity or sex assigned at birth.
Kanter Freedom is not the only former NBA player who has expressed his intention to enter the WNBA. Royce White has also publicly stated his intention to be considered eligible to compete in the league.
