BANGKOK, THAILAND. The number two ranked Brazilian sextet defeated the Queens of the Caribbean 3-1 (18-25, 25-12, 25-20 and 25-12) this Sunday in the round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals and thus maintain their undefeated record (4-0) in the Volleyball World Championship (FIVB).

The winners recovered after falling in the first set and swept their rivals in the next three games to take the match.
The winners’ attack was led by Gabi Braga who scored 21 points, followed by Julia Bergmann with 17 points.
For the Dominican Republic, the best was Gaila González with 15 points, followed by Jineirys Martínez with nine and Brayelin Martínez with just eight points, in a low-scoring match. Las Reinas had the support of the Ministry of Sports and Farmacias GBC.
In the first match, the Dominican Republic team played almost perfectly with good passes, excellent reception, and good attacks by Brayelin Martínez, Yonkaira Peña, and Gaila González. It was the third consecutive victory of the Brazilians over the Dominicans in a World Championship, according to the FIVB website.
After the first few minutes where the score was kept by a one-point lead between both teams, Dominican Republic went on a 3-0 run to put the score at 11-9.
From then on, the Brazilians never stuck to the scoreboard, despite the effort of Gabi, who achieved good shots.
Gaila González closed the partial with three consecutive points with great power that was not handled by the Brazilian defense.
In the second set, the Brazilians came out like a whirlwind and went on an 11-1 run that put the Criollas in trouble, who had problems deciphering the rival’s block which was very effective.
Then, the winners made another 5-0 rally against the Dominican Republic to put the game at 18-4. Brazil’s blocking was lethal for the Caribbean team and Gabi closed the match with strong spikes.
In the third games, Brazil started with a 4-1 lead and good attacks from Brayelin Martínez brought the Dominican Republic closer to 8-6, but Gabi, once again, distanced Brazil 15-8.
The Brazilians took advantage of several services that the defeated team missed, and Gabi continued hammering with strong spikes that were not blocked by their rivals. Marcos made several changes looking for a reaction from his team.
In the fourth set, once again, Brazil started strong and made the score 4-1 with good attacks from Gabi and Bergmann. Gaila González stood out for the Dominicans with good spikes, as did Brenda Castillo who gave a defensive recital, but it was not enough.
The Brazilian team’s blocking grew in the fourth set and barely allowed the Dominican team to score 12 points. The Queens of the Caribbean had problems receiving the ball and some defensive indecisions that were points for their opponents.
