The Real Madrid forward scored a brace in the French team’s victory and reached 58 goals in the French jersey, surpassing the historic mark of 57 goals set by Olivier Giroud.

The historic feat came in his 99th match with the senior national team, a significantly lower figure than the 137 matches Giroud needed to set the previous record.

Mbappé opened the scoring for France with an elegant finish after receiving an assist from Michael Olise, setting his team on the path to an important victory in the Group I opener. Later, as Senegal tried to react in the final minutes, he appeared again to seal the match with his second goal of the night.

In addition to becoming the top scorer in the history of France, the attacker extended his legacy in the World Cups. With his two goals, he reached 14 World Cup goals, equaling the mark of the legendary German Gerd Müller and placing himself in third place of all time among the top scorers of the competition.

Now, the Frenchman has within his reach the records of Ronaldo Nazário, who accumulated 15 goals in World Cups, and Miroslav Klose, the tournament’s all-time top scorer with 16 goals.

At 27 years old, Mbappé continues to write golden pages in the history of international football. Since his debut with the French national team in 2017, he has established himself as the team’s offensive benchmark and a fundamental piece in the recent successes of Les Bleus.

With the 2026 World Cup still in its early stages, the French striker has the opportunity to continue expanding his records and further consolidate himself among the greatest legends in the history of world football.

The new record confirms Mbappé’s extraordinary impact in the France jersey and reinforces his candidacy to be considered one of the best players of his generation.
