Formula 1 races will be 15 kilometers shorter starting in the 2027 season, after the F1 Commission agreed to reduce the total race distance from 305 to 290 kilometers. The change will mean two or three fewer laps, depending on the circuit.
The adjustment is linked to changes in fuel flow for the new-generation engines. According to Formula 1 and the FIA, the reduction in race distance follows from the previously approved changes to fuel flow for next season.
Monaco will be the only exception. The race will remain at 78 laps because its total distance is already below the standard 305-kilometer distance.
Formula 1 also confirmed changes to the 2027 calendar. Barcelona will take a one-year break as part of its rotation with Spa-Francorchamps, while the Netherlands will leave the calendar. Portugal and Turkey will join the schedule, and the number of sprint weekends will increase to 10.
