Two Milligan University students were killed and seven others injured after a driver crashed into the school’s cycling team during a training ride Wednesday morning in Hampton, Tennessee.
Sophomores Haylan Engdahl and Brayden Rodgers were among 11 cyclists training on Highway 19E when they were struck shortly before 9 a.m., according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol. Both were pronounced dead at the scene, about 11 miles from the university campus. Seven other cyclists were taken to Johnson City Medical Center, with four listed in critical condition, two in stable condition and another later released.
Authorities identified the driver as 69-year-old John Benfield of Newland, North Carolina. He was charged with two counts of vehicular homicide by recklessness and five counts of aggravated assault by vehicle by recklessness. Additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues.
