November 2nd: All Souls’ Day

November 2nd is dedicated to the celebration of All Souls’ Day or the Day of the Faithful Departed, to honor and commemorate the faithful departed of the Catholic and Christian religion.
This commemoration was instituted in the year 998 by the Benedictine monk Saint Odilo of France, being adopted by Rome in the 16th century and subsequently spread throughout the world.
What is All Souls’ Day?
All Souls’ Day is a religious holiday celebrated by some Christian churches (Western Orthodox Christian Churches, Union of Utrecht, Porvoo Communion, Anglican Communion, and the Catholic Church), in memory of the deceased.
This anniversary is also known as “All Souls’ Day” or “Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed.” It is linked to the Catholic celebration of “All Saints’ Day” and the “Day of the Dead.” Its purpose is to pray for the faithful who have died and for those who are in a state of purification in Purgatory, according to the Catholic religion.
This celebration is based on the doctrine which establishes that upon death, the souls of the faithful have not been cleansed of venial sins, or have not been expiated for past transgressions. Because such souls cannot attain the Beatific Vision, prayers and the sacrifice of the Mass are offered.
During this day, believers offer their prayers or suffrages, sacrifices, and the mass so that the faithful departed may reach the presence of God.
Why is All Souls’ Day celebrated?
All Souls’ Day or the Day of the Faithful Departed commemorates those who have died, known as the faithful departed.
There are some popular beliefs of pagan origin regarding All Souls’ Day. For example, peasants in various Catholic countries fervently believe that on the night of the dead, the deceased return to the homes where they lived before passing away.
