Those connecting from Canada will continue to see the name Lake Ontario

Washington.- The satellite-based global mapping and positioning service of Google has changed the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America for users in the United States after U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order to rename this body of water that his country shares with Canada amidst the escalation of the trade conflict between Washington and Ottawa.

The Californian tech giant announced on its blog on Saturday that the change has begun to be implemented for users connecting in the United States based on the new name of the lake assigned by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Geographic Names Information System.

In an executive order signed last Thursday, Trump instructed the USGS to rename it Lake America.

Those connecting from Canada will continue to see the name Lake Ontario, while those connecting from third countries will see both names.

It is not the first change promoted by Trump

Google did the same when Trump signed an executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America in January 2025 in retaliation for what he considered an insufficient response from the neighboring country in the fight against fentanyl trafficking.

The dialectical clashes between the United States and Canada have been escalating in recent days following the failure of trade negotiations this very month.

The breakdown of the dialogue led to the imposition, starting August 22, of new 50% US tariffs on various Canadian goods that Donald Trump had announced, a measure to which Ottawa will retaliate with the implementation of corresponding customs duties that will come into effect on September 8.
