Trough brings showers and thunderstorms; Tropical Storm Erin moves across the Atlantic

Santo Domingo.– The incidence of a trough in the upper levels of the troposphere continues to generate moderate to heavy showers, accompanied by electrical storms and wind gusts in several provinces of the country, conditions that will remain until the early hours of the night, according to the National Institute of Meteorology (Indomet). Precipitation mainly affects Peravia, San Cristóbal, San José de Ocoa, Azua, San Juan, Elías Piña, Dajabón and Santiago Rodríguez, while in Santiago, Monte Plata, San Pedro de Macorís and Gran Santo Domingo, less intense rains are recorded.

From early Thursday morning, isolated showers are expected in La Altagracia, El Seibo, Samaná, and María Trinidad Sánchez. In the afternoon, the trough and the effects of the diurnal cycle will cause local downpours, electrical storms, and possible wind gusts in areas such as Santo Domingo, Monte Plata, Sánchez Ramírez, Azua, San Juan, Independencia, Bahoruco, Dajabón, Santiago Rodríguez, and Monte Cristi.

As Tropical Storm Erin is located about 1,900 km east of the Lesser Antilles, moving west at 28 km/h with maximum sustained winds of 85 km/h. It is expected to reach hurricane category in the coming days.

For Friday, the arrival of a tropical wave is forecast, which, in the afternoon and evening, will increase cloudiness with showers, thunderstorms, and wind gusts in provinces of the northeast, southeast, Central Mountain Range, and border area. Authorities urge the population to take precautions due to the rains and, due to the high temperatures typical of summer, avoid sun exposure between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., hydrate adequately and wear light-colored clothing.
