A waterspout that developed into a tornado made landfall in Cape May Point, New Jersey, amid a series of intense storms affecting the area. The phenomenon produced maximum winds of about 105 km/h, damaging trees and disrupting power, according to the National Weather Service.
No deaths or serious injuries were reported in New Jersey.
Meanwhile, severe storms caused flash flooding in parts of Brooklyn and Queens on Thursday, August 20, forcing closures along sections of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and Long Island Expressway. Forecasters had raised the flash-flood risk to Level 3 of 4, with rainfall rates approaching 2 inches per hour.
