At least 41 young people died in South Africa as a result of complications from circumcision procedures performed during traditional initiation ceremonies, authorities in the country reported.
The ceremonies, which are part of a rite of passage into adulthood in several South African communities, took place between the months of November and December in different provinces. During these rituals, participants are subjected to traditional practices that include circumcision, in many cases outside of adequate medical environments.
The Minister of Traditional Affairs pointed out that many of the deaths were related to negligence, lack of supervision, and the operation of unregistered initiation schools, as well as non-compliance with safety regulations established by the authorities.
South African legislation requires these schools to be properly authorized and for participants to meet age and family consent requirements. However, the authorities acknowledged that illegal centers continue to operate, increasing the risks to the health of young people.
Deaths have generated national concern and have reignited the debate on the need to strengthen the regulation and supervision of these traditional practices, in order to preserve the culture without endangering the lives of the participants.
