Santo Domingo.– The Ministry of Public Health confirmed two cases of mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, at a police station in the San Cristóbal province, where it maintains an active epidemiological surveillance protocol and is monitoring individuals who may have been exposed.
The institution reported that the investigation carried out by the General Directorate of Epidemiology (DIGEPI) identified nine people under evaluation. Of that total, two tested positive through RT-PCR tests, while another seven cases remain under analysis.
The authorities indicated that the detected cases correspond to individuals who are currently under detention and specified that, so far, the event remains limited to the police facility, with no evidence of community transmission.
Given the situation, the Ministry activated the Rapid Response Group, composed of specialists from DIGEPI, the Vice Ministry of Risk Management and Environmental Health, as well as the Provincial Health Directorate of San Cristóbal.
The health team carries out epidemiological research actions, active search for possible cases, contact tracing, sample collection, and evaluation of the hygiene and health conditions of the detachment.

Public Health also reported that surveillance measures were reinforced and recommendations were issued to improve the sanitary conditions of the place, while monitoring continues to detect any possible new contagion.
The entity recalled that mpox is a viral disease that can cause skin rashes, fever, headache, muscle aches, and swollen lymph nodes, so it urged the population to stay attentive to official channels and report any suspected cases.
