United Nations.- UN Secretary-General António Guterres said on Wednesday that he is “concerned” about the lack of action by the Security Council in the face of the war in the Middle East unleashed after the bombings by the United States and Israel against Iran.
This is how Guterres’ spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, explained it in his daily press conference, in which he pointed out that the Secretary-General continues to maintain contact with the ambassadors of the countries affected by the escalation in the Middle East, such as Iran, Oman and Saudi Arabia.
“We have been concerned for some time about the lack of unity in the Security Council when addressing a series of issues. I believe the Security Council has the primary responsibility for maintaining peace and security, and we encourage members to find common ground to that end,” Dujarric declared.
The spokesperson was asked about the fact that the Security Council has only met once to address the conflict since it began.
Unique meeting since the beginning of the conflict
Last Saturday, the day the attacks began, the Council held an emergency session in which Guterres intervened and which was chaired by the United Kingdom, which until then held the rotating presidency of that body, which was replaced by the United States from Monday.
For its inauguration, it convened a session on childhood, technology, and education in conflicts, which was chaired by the First Lady of the United States, Melania Trump, who did not refer to the children killed by the bombs dropped during the offensive in the Middle East.
In addition to having postponed the press conference on their priorities this month indefinitely, the US representatives have convened a new Council session in which they will predictably not talk about the conflict in the region.
The body will hold a meeting on “energy, critical minerals and security” while the bombings have been going on for almost a week.
Guterres, for his part, expressed “his hope” that the conflict would end “quickly” and that “dialogue would resume for the sake of regional stability.”
