Banco Popular allocates 41% of its commercial portfolio to the financing of MSMEs

Santo Domingo.– Banco Popular Dominicano leads credit to micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in the country, remaining the financial intermediation entity with the largest balance of loans allocated to this sector, with a portfolio of RD$157.31 billion as of the end of April 2026, according to the most recent report from the Dominican Banking Market Information System (SIMBAD) of the Superintendency of Banks (SB).

This volume of financing for MSMEs represented at that time 40.8% of Banco Popular’s total commercial portfolio. The portfolio for the MSME segment in particular also recorded a year-on-year growth of 4.1% and accounted for 59,600 loans for the referred period.

These results reflect Banco Popular’s sustained support for Dominican MSMEs and its role as a financial ally to a fundamental sector for productive activity, job creation, and national economic growth.

According to the report “Financing for Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises” by the SB, MSMEs contribute a value added equivalent to 32% of the gross domestic product (GDP) and generate around 3.05 million jobs, equivalent to 61.6% of total employment. Likewise, they represent 98.5% of the companies registered in the National Taxpayer Registry, according to 2024 data cited in the report.

“As financial allies of MSMEs, at Banco Popular we strengthen their ability to contribute to the development of a more dynamic, competitive, and sustainable economy,” stated Christopher Paniagua, executive president of Banco Popular.

El Popular supports MSMEs in the different stages of their development through financial solutions aimed at meeting their operational and investment needs and contributing to increasing their competitiveness and growth capacity.

According to the Superintendency of Banks, Popular recorded an accumulated interest rate of 11.7% for MSME financing as of April 2026, placing it among the entities with the lowest rates for this segment. Its MSME portfolio also showed a delinquency rate of only 1.3%, according to the report.

Across the financial system, the bank credit portfolio for MSMEs reached RD$576,837 million at the end of April 2026, representing a year-on-year growth of 9.1%.

Banco Popular complements its credit offering with various initiatives that promote the competitiveness and dynamism of this business segment.
