Santo Domingo.- Banco BHD and the Dominican Association of Sports Tourism (Adoturd) announced the execution of the first research study on sports tourism with national and international scope.

The research “Economic Impact Study of Sports Tourism in the Dominican Republic” will be conducted by the Center for Tourism Studies and Local Development (CETDEL) and is part of an agreement announced by the Bank and the Association within the framework of this year’s International Tourism Trade Fair (Fitur).

Among other aspects, the research will allow for the separate measurement of this subsector, provide relevant data on investment and the contribution of sports tourism to the Dominican economy, and help understand the consumer profile. Likewise, it will contribute to optimizing public policies, fostering innovation, and, above all, contributing to the sustainability of sports tourism which, according to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), represents 10% of total global tourist spending.

Steven Puig, president of Banco BHD, stated that “We believe our country has all the potential to further strengthen this niche, and that is why we want to join efforts to support the National Sports Tourism Strategy through research, which is a fundamental pillar for designing data-driven strategies.”

“Sports tourism is the fastest-growing sector in the tourism industry. Our country has everything to become the main sports tourism hub in the Caribbean and Central America. This research will be an essential step in the joint goal we have with BHD to promote sustainable initiatives that generate economic impact, social inclusion, and greater international visibility for the Dominican Republic,” stated Yerik Pérez, president of Adoturd.

Sports tourism is an economic accelerator that increases the average length of stay and raises direct and indirect spending, while strengthening the country’s reputation and investment.

In addition to research, the strategic alliance between the financial entity and Adoturd includes the creation of a value proposition with financial products for organizers, tour operators, athletes, and participants in sporting events, as well as training for micro-enterprises and SMEs on the characteristics, needs, and opportunities in the sports tourism value chain sports.
