The acting president of the Social Democratic Institutional Bloc (BIS), José Francisco Peña Tavárez, called on the population to participate in the march convened by the Fuerza del Pueblo party for this Sunday, November 30, assuring that expressing oneself and pointing out what is wrong is an essential part of the democratic exercise. Peña Tavárez stated that accompanying this day “should not be seen as an act of political confrontation, but as a legitimate expression of citizen participation and commitment to the country.” “It’s not politics. Marching is also citizenship. It’s raising your voice when something is not right and doing so from responsibility, respect, and deep love for the Dominican Republic and the future we deserve in a present that helps us achieve it,” he expressed. The acting president of the BIS emphasized that the role of citizens is not limited to voting every four years, but also to actively participating in the processes that seek solutions to the social and economic challenges of the country. Furthermore, he affirmed that the BIS supports the importance of people having spaces to express themselves and be heard: “When the citizenry speaks, democracy is strengthened. Participating is not claiming for political differences, it is telling the country that we want things to improve,” he pointed out. Peña Tavárez highlighted that the march called by Fuerza del Pueblo is an opportunity for various sectors of society to express their concerns in a peaceful, civic, and organized manner.
In that sense, he reiterated his call to the population:
“This Sunday let’s march together. Not for flags, but for the right to live better, safely and with our basic needs guaranteed. Citizenship is exercised by speaking, participating and walking for what we believe is just”.
