Bonao.– Under the slogan “The sweetest expression of Creole flavor”, the tenth version of the Hydrangea Fair-Festival was inaugurated, a cultural and ecotourism event that highlights the identity and talent of the so-called Villa de las Hortensias. The celebration will extend until Sunday, September 21st in the municipality of Bonao, Monseñor Nouel province, with the sponsorship of the Feria-Festival de las Hortensias Committee and the Municipal Council. The organization of the event is in charge of the cultural manager Celeste García, with the participation and collaboration of Governor Adela Tejada, Mayor Eberto Núñez, the young businessman and politician César Cerda, among other personalities who have joined efforts to make this fair a reality. In this edition, the new Queen of the Hydrangeas is former Governor Miriam Abreu, who was crowned at the opening ceremony. The fair includes a varied program that combines art, culture, and tradition. Attendees will be able to enjoy exhibitions of sculptures on wooden saints, paintings by local artists, poetry recitals, children’s literary afternoons, as well as folk music and dances. This year, the fair is dedicated to the promotion of Creole sweets, organic cocoa, and artisanal production, emblematic products of the region. The opening day was highlighted by the coronation of the queen and the ladies of the hydrangeas, followed by artistic presentations by the Politécnico Ramón Corcino-Los Arroces and the Caliente con Mambo del Verde group.

On Saturday the 20th, the appointment continues in Duarte Park with a poetry recital that brings together poets from the mountains, the lake, San Francisco, Santo Domingo and Bonao. In addition, the awards ceremony for the “Paint the Hydrangeas” contest will be held, which will recognize five native painters.

On Sunday 21st, the fair is dedicated to children with the activity “Tell Me a Story”, face painting and a special toast. The day will culminate with the presentation of the Hogar Las Palmas Youth Symphony Orchestra-UNAD and a merengue concert, closing with a flourish by the Municipal Music Band. The Hydrangea Fair-Festival not only celebrates the colorfulness of this flower, a symbol of Bonao, but also promotes the rescue of popular culture, the economic development of the communities, and the hospitality of its people. The historical origin of Bonao, founded in 1496 in the Chiefdom of Maguana, is enriched by these types of initiatives that recall its roots and strengthen its identity. The activity was formalized through resolutions 09/2014 and 13/2016 of the City Council of Bonao, proposed by the Coordinator of the Committee Feria-Festival de las Hortensias. With this tenth edition, Bonao reaffirms its title as the fifth ecotourism province of the country and its role as the gateway to the Cibao, land of artists such as the master Cándido Bidó, the immortal voice of Luis Díaz and the talents of Héctor Acosta and Nelson de la Olla.
